RAY OF HOPE FOR KYANKWANZI AREA AS NWSC EMBARKS ON A MEGA WATER SUPPY PROJECT

The people of Kyankwanzi and surrounding communities finally have one more reason to smile, after National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s move to boost water production in the Area by constructing a new Water Supply System. 

Following this decision and in line with the procurement guidelines, a pre-bid meeting was held on 16th February 2022, allowing all the prospective bidders to visit the project sites and familiarize themselves with the tender requirements and scope of work.

The new Project shall entail the construction of a new 3,000,000 litres per day Conventional Water Treatment Plant on River Mayanja against the current production capacity of 160,000 litres per day, depending on boreholes. The Project shall also entail the construction of an in-take on River Mayanja (at Kabale bridge), laying of 17km of DN250mm raw and treated water pumping mains, and, construction of an additional 300,000-litre tank at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.

Speaking to the bidders at the Kyankwanzi Area office, the Project Manager, Eng. Denis Taremwa elaborated on the contents of the Tender Documents. He highlighted some of the salient futures in the Tender documents, like; procurement schedule, bid security amount and validity period, detailed scope of work, Joint Venture requirements, and foreign currency requirements, among others. 

The Project Manager also took the bidders through the technical specifications, bills of quantities and drawings, and the evaluation criteria that shall be followed in evaluating the bids. He emphasized the need for bidders to attach certificates of completion for previous projects and, the due diligence which will be conducted to verify and confirm all the information submitted by the bidders.

Detailed designs for the new Project were completed, after which, construction works tenders were advertised on 28th January 2022, with a submission deadline of 29th March 2022.

The project plans have it that the procurement process shall be completed in April 2022, and the works contract signed in May 2022. Construction works are envisaged to commence in June 2022 and the last 15months, followed by a 12months defects notification period.

Once completed, the new Project shall serve a population of about 151,600 people residing in Butemba Sub County, Butemba Town Council, Kyankwanzi Sub County, Nsambya Sub County, Wattuba Sub County, and Kyankwanzi Town Council (including NALI), among others, with provision for future extension to Ngoma Town Council and Kiboga Town.
