Access to clean and safe water is more than a basic necessity it is a fundamental human right that underpins public health, protects dignity, and drives socio-economic development.

Recognizing this, the Government of Uganda has continued to prioritize investments in water and sanitation infrastructure across the country, steadily expanding access to essential services and improving the quality of life for millions of citizens.

These efforts are yielding tangible results. Nationally, access to improved water sources now stands at 71 percent, reflecting years of sustained investment and infrastructure development.

Urban water coverage has reached 74.5 percent, while rural coverage has risen to 68 percent, demonstrating significant progress in narrowing the service gap between urban and rural communities.

The achievements recorded during the 2025/26 financial year have been particularly noteworthy. Safe water services were extended to 553 villages, transforming the lives of thousands of households that previously faced long journeys in search of water.

This progress was supported by the construction of more than 200 large solar-powered water and sanitation systems, providing sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for communities across the country. Additional investments included the development of public sanitation facilities, faecal sludge treatment plants, and the expansion of urban water systems to meet growing demand.

Building on these gains, the Government has allocated Shs 1.013 trillion to the water and environment sector for the 2026/27 financial year. The investment underscores a continued commitment to achieving universal access to safe water and sanitation services and accelerating progress toward national development goals.

As implementation of the new budget gets underway, communities across the country can expect further expansion of water and sanitation infrastructure, bringing the nation closer to a future where every citizen has access to safe, reliable and sustainable water services.
