ADDRESSING LUWEERO’S WATER WOES: PLANS UNDERWAY FOR BULK WATER TRANSFER FROM NAKASONGOLA

In Luweero, a region grappling with water scarcity amidst an escalating population and emerging industries, the reliance on boreholes has become increasingly strained. Recognizing the pressing need for alternative water sources, the Area Engineer, Eng. Nathan Etyang and Quality Officer Mr. Wassajja Charles carried out a field survey with the aim of exploring the feasibility of transferring substantial water volumes from Nakasongola Water Works, located 70 kilometers away.

At Nakasongola water treatment plant, with a capacity to produce 400m3/hr, a significant portion of the day sees the plant underutilized, operating for only eight hours. This surplus water resource stands ripe for transfer to neighboring Luweero, where demand continues to escalate.

The proposed solution involves the installation of high-lift pumps at the Nakasongola plant. These pumps would facilitate the transportation of water via a 12″ ductile iron pipe to Luweero. Additionally, a booster station is envisioned to amplify water pressure, ensuring efficient distribution to Nalongo in Luweero, where a reservoir tank stands ready for deployment. From this strategic hub, water can then be disseminated to surrounding villages and towns.

The project set addresses immediate needs and also lays the groundwork for future growth and development.

As discussions progress and plans materialize, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact this initiative will have on Luweero’s residents and businesses alike. Access to reliable water sources is fundamental to socio-economic progress, and this project promises to be a catalyst for positive change in the region.
