Today 5th July 2021 the NWSC Management was handed over the; Katosi Water Treatment Plant, Nsumba Reservoir and Transmission Main and Sonde/Namugongo Booster. Greater Kampala can now heave a sigh of relief. A project which will increase production by 160,000 m3 per day and with provision for future expansion to 240,000m³per day bound to meet the intended objective of improved welfare of the people of Eastern Kampala and the surrounding Areas.
The Project which commenced in August 2018 was completed in March 2021 and effective takeover was on 5th July 2021. The Plant has undergone a successful commissioning over the last three (03) months, and is currently supplying treated water to the Eastern, Northern, and Central parts of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, relieving the Ggaba System of the extra demand, and is
currently being used to supply the Southern, Western and Central parts of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area
It should also be noted that, the completion and operationalization of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, has improved the water supply situation in the formerly dry zones and now saturated with water. The supply areas of Mukono, Seeta, Sonde, Namugongo, Kyaliwajala, Kira, Bulindo, Naguru,
Buwate, Kasangati, Gayaza, Namanve, Bweyogere, Kirinya, etc. which were previously dry and had perpetual water supply challenges are all currently receiving water 24/7 from the Katosi system.
“The Water and Environment Sector is currently faced with the challenge of rapid urbanization within the country, particularly in Kampala, where the population growth rate is currently estimated at about 5% per annum since 2019. This has created pressure on the existing facilities like the Ggaba Water Treatment Plant that supplies Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. Therefore, handing over of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant will directly address the water supply challenges that have been facing the people of Mukono and the surrounding Areas of Eastern Kampala”, stated the NWSC B.O.D Chairman, Eng. Badru Kigunddu while addressing all present during the handover ceremony.
Remarkably, the Katosi Water Treatment Plant was constructed with much consideration of the environment in which it is located, in a forest conservation reserve, which offers a long-term protection from encroachment and pollution, thereby guaranteeing good quality water.
This grand project’s Development Partners include; European Union Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund (EU-ITF), European Investment Bank (EIB), Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), and Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW) and the Government of Uganda (GoU).
