NWSC has been at the forefront of the implementation of the Kisoro Virungas Water Supply Extension (KVWSE) which is the key output of the Water4Virungas Project (Dec 2016 – March 2021) which was on 17 th May 2021 commissioned by the Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Dr. Philemon Mateke.
The KVWSE project is one of the infrastructural investments implemented as an effort towards conflict resolution between communities living at the foot of the Virunga Volcanic Ranges in Uganda-Rwanda-DRC and the Wildlife in the National Parks that are located in that zone.
This project is an upgrade of the existing distribution system which is interconnecting the New Nkanka Network with the old Chuho Network through a new Booster Station at Bukara Village in Muramba Sub County, that delivers 50,000Litres per hour to serve a demand in the project area of 35,000Litres per hour. The excess 15,000Litres per hour will be extended further through SCAP- 100 to serve dry zones like Kibugu RGC-Muramba SubCounty and Upper Rutare Parish in Chahi
Sub-County.
Characterized by 17 villages in the Parishes of Rukongi, Gitenderi and Gisozi with in 2 Sub-Counties of Nyarusiza and Muramba covering about 27m², the KVWSE project Area is located in Kisoro District and is currently serving about 19,512 people though designed to serve up to 25,500 people by 2033.
Notably, a lot has been done under the KVWSE project namely; 3 level stakeholder engagement (District Leadership level, Sub County Leadership level and Beneficiary Village Level), constructed 2 new Booster Stations (Bukara Booster of 50,000Litres/hr and Buzeyi Booster of 16,000Litres/hr), upgraded 2 existing Booster Stations in Nyarusiza Sub County (Nyarusiza Booster from 10,000Litres/hr to 40,000Litres/hr, Gasiza Booster from 10,000Litres/hr to 30,000Litres/hr and
also, constructed 5 new Reservoirs of total storage capacity of 414,000Liters making over all storage in the zone of 714,000Litres.
The project has also seen to the installation of 2 Diesel Generators (80KVA at Gasiza Booster the and 45KVA at Buzeyi Booster) and, a 1.2km 3-phase Hydro Electricity line from Bunagana Road to Bukara Booster, 2.1km 3-phase Hydro Electricity line from Gasiza to the new Buzeyi Booster. It also upgraded the power connection at Gasiza Booster with installation of a 100KVA transformer, laid a robust transmission main of 9.6km, laid a distribution network of 25.1km, constructed 34 PSPs in 17 villages and, set up and trained 34 Water user committees for proper management of the PSPs.
Water4Virungas Coordinator, Executive Secretary for Greater Virungas Transboundary Collaboration, Kisoro District Local Government, UWA, UPDF, UP and the Media were part of the stakeholders present at the commissioning.
The key partners recognized for playing key roles in the project include; International Gorilla Conservation Programme, Wageningen University and Research, Uganda Wild Life Authority, Witteveen+Bos, Managing Development Forward-Uganda, Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration and, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. The commissioning of this project gives utmost confidence for sustainability of the new Water Supply System to the community in Kisoro.
