They say the only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary. Nearly half way through the year, Kampala Water staff have consistently proved they can do the work. All this and more culminated in the Kampala Water Labour Day celebrations held at Kyambogo cricket grounds on the 6th of May 2022.

The day was packed with activities ranging from sports, exhibitions and a parade.

Literally kicking off with football, staff from the Centre (KW HQ), took on a team comprising the best from KW branches who, despite their best attempts, couldn’t hold back the Centre team as they put two goals past them.

On the main grounds, guards from the various military training cohorts were joined by long serving staff, future leaders, exceptional ladies in water & sanitation and innovators in practice, for the opening parade.

Staff also utilized the day to exhibit their ingenuity and business acumen at the side hustle tent. Proving once again the diverse skills and talents at Kampala Water. Be it fashion, food or tech, they had it all.

These skills were also at display at the exhibition tent. Here, KW home grown technologies such as the EMTO system and KSAN sanitizer were on display. With the innovators behind these projects at arm’s length, it was a unique opportunity to engage with the innovations and the people behind them.

With rehearsals done, staff took their seats to watch the parade. Commanded by Joseph Arinaitwe, the guards marched across the field in step with the beat from the brass band. As though immune to the heat, the guards started off with a slow march before goose marching past the VIP tent. Here, the GM-KW: Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya, SM-HR: Peter Makumbi, SM-PR: Samuel Apedel, SM-KEZ: Pacific Otto, SM-CEZ: Sarah Namuwenge, SM-WEZ: Helen Ejang, SM Water Supply: Eng Moses Bigabwa, SM- NRW: Eng. Godfrey Arinaitwe, SM-IT: Topista Mpora, SM- Sewerage Services: Eng James Maiteki, SM-WPD: Eng Gilbert Muhwezi, SM-BDM: Dr. Nicholas Mwebaze, PPRO Sheba Bamwine witnessed a display of discipline and commitment from the staff as they marched past.

With the parade done, the VIPs then took a tour of the exhibition and side hustle tents, taking time to appreciate the staff and their skills.

The fun didn’t stop there, as it was to what could be the most fun event. The Tug of War pitted branch against branch, with the winner of each round advancing to the next. In teams of 6 men and 4 ladies, the branches took on each other, proving which was better fed, or rather, physically stronger.

Competition could have been the theme of the day as it was then time for the Fashion show. KW zones and the Centre put on displays of fashion from various regions of Uganda and even Rwanda. Looking as comfortable in traditional wear as in office clothes, staff walked out to the guests draped in bark cloth, beads and fabric to display Buganda, Luo and Rwandese dress. Some went as far as dancing for the guests.

This was a good Segway into the traditional dances which featured Acholi, Buganda, Bugisu and Teso.

As the barbeque smoke started to wet people’s appetites, time came to award the best of the day.

The centre team took their trophy for their swift dismissal of the KW Branch team. Guard one, led by Senior PRO-Sheila Nabafu received medals for best parade. KW-CEZ took home the medal for fashion and the Centre team took the traditional dance title.

For the first of its kind, the day proved to be a success. Thanks in no small part to the work of KW staff and management.
