WATER PRODUCTION AND QUALITY CHALLENGES IN LWENGO TO END SOON

National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has embarked on the process of improving water production and quality in the Lwengo supply area. This intervention is targeting the towns of Kinoni, Mbirizi, Kyazanga and Katovu, together with all the surrounding areas.

Currently, the water supplied to these towns is characterized by very high iron and hardness levels. As such, the need for the introduction of a treatment process to remove the Iron and hardness was inevitable.

It is in this regard that a team from NWSC’s Planning and Capital Development department has been engaged to design an appropriate Water Treatment Plant for Lwengo.

A Team comprised of Senior Manager-Infrastructure Planning & Development, Eng. Denis Taremwa, Senior Projects Engineer, Ritah Nalumasi, Senior Public Relations Officer-Central Region, Ms. Cream Treasure, Lwengo Area Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Muhigane and, Area engineer Mugisha Richard, spent rendezvoused in Lwengo assessing the current challenges and brainstorming on the possible interventions. The Team visited all the existing and undeveloped boreholes as well as the site earmarked for the Water Treatment Plant, where, a number of ideas were shared.

Preliminarily, water from the existing, and recently drilled boreholes shall be pumped to the new Plant for treatment, where it shall be pumped to the existing reservoirs for distribution into the supply network. Following the field exercise, detailed designs for the Treatment Plant have commenced.
