If you pay for your water on a meter and suspect your bill is high, this might be because there is a water leak or overflow. You may be paying for water that’s going to waste.

Find out what to do if you suspect you have a water leak and how to work out who’s responsible for fixing it.

How to spot water leaks;

It’s possible you may have a water leak if:

you hear the sound of running water,

running water is visible or there are wet areas,

there are a lot of plants growing near pipework, especially during dry weather,

the water pressure in your home falls.

Leaks from pipes, plumbing fixtures, and fittings are a significant source of water waste for many households.

On average, a considerable number of customers lose about 5 gallons of water per day to indoor leaks. Some leaks are obvious, such as dripping faucets and leaking water heaters. Unfortunately, many leaks go undetected for years because the source of the leak is not visible

For problems related to the public water supply, the public is always reminded to contact their nearest branch or NWSC through the call center, social media handles, NWSC website, and call any contact person in NWSC.  It is crucial to act promptly once one detects a water leak to prevent further damage and water wastage.

Who’s responsible for fixing a water leak?

It’s your obligation to identify and repair a leakage that occurs within your property, especially if it’s after your meter. This comprises pipes and fixtures within your residence.

Dear customer, the cost of repairing all leakages after the meter on your property is your duty. Likewise, when there is an increase in the bill due to the leakage (that wasn’t repaired), the customer has to clear it, this can be done by visiting your branch and signing an Areas Payment Agreement (APS) which must be adhered to.

While being mindful of leakages after the meter at your property, customers need to be cautioned on water conservation at all costs. Every leakage, however small, needs to be repaired as soon as it’s noticed as this can lead to water wastage and an increase in your water bill expenditure.

As we all strive to reduce water leakages in many ways, customers can reach out to NWSC through the toll-free help lines or visit the branch office to enable us to provide help by recommending a plumber who can have the leakage resolved.
