WALOPU CRACKS DOWN ON CHINESE BUSINESSMAN’S ILLEGAL WATER CONNECTION

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has long been dedicated to providing its customers with a continuous and sustainable supply of clean water. To achieve this, the corporation invests substantial resources into ensuring the integrity of its water treatment and supply systems. Nevertheless, NWSC continues to grapple with extensive losses attributed to Non-Revenue Water (NRW), primarily caused by water theft and infrastructure damage. In response to this pressing issue, the Kampala Water region established the “Water Loss Prevention Unit” (WALOPU), an entity that has worked tirelessly for over eight years to eradicate NRW through customer tips, investigations, and proactive measures.

Recent developments in the war against NRW have led WALOPU to an intriguing case involving a Chinese businessman who owns a restaurant in Kololo, Kampala. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue through diplomatic means, the businessman was found to be illegally consuming water.

The situation ultimately led to a dramatic raid on the restaurant by the dedicated team from the Central Business District (CBD) Zone, which had been closely monitoring the restaurant’s water consumption. Their vigilance revealed irregularities, prompting the transfer of the case to WALOPU for a more in-depth analysis, eventually unveiling a meter bypass.

The evidence gathered during the raid was taken to the 6th street offices and meticulously documented for further action. However, the team’s journey towards justice was far from straightforward. In their pursuit of upholding the law, they faced resistance from the restaurant’s owners. Seeking assistance, they reached out to Kira Road Police Commander, who offered crucial support. With their combined efforts, the suspect was apprehended and handed over to the National Water authorities for a formal statement.

This incident serves as a reminder that water theft and illegal consumption can have serious consequences, even for well-established businesses. The dedication of NWSC and its subsidiaries to maintain water quality and ensure the fair distribution of this vital resource is second to none, as exemplified by the actions of WALOPU.

The corporation is committed to “Water for All”.
