Water is one of the fundamental essentials that all humans are entitled to, and despite the commercial orientation of its operation, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation has a social mission to increase safe water coverage to the entire population with the Urban Poor realm in the priority section.

The Urban Poor are, by virtue of their socio-economic background, living in the water supply areas characterized by depriving aspects of life conditions such as; mode of income and subsistence, settlement and environment, lack of basic necessities, lack of social services and more so access to clean and safe water.

Against that background, the corporation has policies in place, regular engagements and interventions to aid those under Urban Poor with the latest being “token registration and usage”.

Urban Pro-poor community mobilizers, Doreen Musiimenta and Clinton stimulated community engagement on how to use pre-paid meters (PPM) with emphasis on the tokens thus how to acquire, load money on and use them in the pre-paid meters.

The teams enlisted the help of community leaders of both Luzira and Butabika to ease the engagement which was utterly effective as over 450 stakeholders filled in forms to get a token.

The residents were ecstatic about the exercise and celebrated the end of long distance walks to get water. Now, they get to enjoy clean safe water and at an extremely affordable price.

Notably, Urban Pro-poor community mobilizers are to re-register tokens on Saturday 14th April 2023 at Mugamba Motel, in Luzira.
