UNPRECEDENTED FLOODING CHALLENGES AWOJA WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS

The intense rains in early May caused significant water level rises and river overflows, particularly affecting the Awoja River. This led to severe flooding between May 7th and 11th, 2024 aggravating the water quality issues already present since April. The flooding resulted in turbid water with concentrated color, impacting consumers and causing stagnant water at Lake Kyoga.

In response, the Awoja Treatment Plant has been a hub of activity, with a dedicated team of quality technicians, led by Dr. Babu, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Manager for Water Quality, and Profilio, a Principal Water Quality Officer, conducting a series of tests and trials aimed at improving the final water quality. These efforts included using solutions such as polymer and alum, alongside rigorous water sampling at regular intervals to measure key parameters like pH levels, turbidity, and residual chlorine.

The trials have so far produced promising results, and there has been a significant reduction in the water’s color concentration and overall improvements in various water quality parameters. The critical data collected during these trials is expected to provide valuable scientific insights into the dynamics of managing River Awoja’s raw water treatment in the future.

The team’s assessment of the water quality improvement trials depicted NWSC’s commitment to reliable and sustainable water production and management practices.

There is optimism for complete success by the end of day, June 28th, 2024 pending the installation of more efficient dosing pumps.

NWSC is committed to “Water for All”.
