To address poverty and stimulate socio-economic development in Kyotera district, Uganda’s Prime Minister, Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) have formed a strategic partnership focused on agricultural advancement.

This comes after, Hon. Nabbanja, along with the Minister of Micro-Finance, Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, and various stakeholders, on June 23rd, 2024 convened at the Kyotera district headquarters to discuss initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of communities in Kyotera and Rakai.

During the meeting, Ms. Mukhwana Halima, the NWSC-Kyotera Area Manager, provided an overview of the corporation’s activities in the district from July 2023 to the present. She detailed ongoing projects designed to tackle water scarcity, such as the operationalization of the Kyampagi borehole, the completion of the Mutukula pumping main, the overhaul of Rakai aerators, and the construction of the Sanje sump.

This was commended by the District Chairperson who went on to appreciate the improvements in water supply, despite challenges like power outages. However, other stakeholders urged continued collaboration with NWSC to further the district’s development goals.

It was at that point that the Prime Minister and NWSC management committed to enhancing service delivery and exploring synergies, particularly regarding underground water resources. The Area Manager assured full support for achieving comprehensive water coverage in the district and confirmed NWSC’s participation in an upcoming exhibition on June 30th, 2024, where the Prime Minister will be the guest of honor.

Notably, this collaboration is expected to boost agriculture, improve livelihoods, and reduce poverty in Kyotera district.
