The Professional Women for Water and Sanitation (PW4WATSAN) Taskforce Committee for the Ugandan Network recently held its inaugural meeting at the International Resource Center (IREC). The meeting, characterized by discussions and strategic planning, laid the groundwork for rejuvenating the network following its dormancy compelled by the 2020-fuelled pandemic lock-down. It has been four years, and it is about time that the network steps up and lays the groundwork for empowering women in the water and sanitation (WATSAN) sector as well as prepare for the AfWASA International Congress & Exhibition to be hosted in Kampala, Uganda from 16th to 20th February 2025.

The Chairperson, Ms. Annet Kukunda, kicked off the meeting with an acknowledgement of the members’ firm commitment to PW4WATSAN’s objectives, and went straight into strategizing on bringing the network back to life with membership growth at the helm as she called for the formation of regional chapters, the establishment of a think tank, and key appointments to drive initiatives. She also emphasized inclusivity, encouraging participation from women across and beyond the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).

A major proposal discussed was a jump-start event which was eventually dubbed “the PW4WATSAN Meet-up” scheduled for January 21st, 2025, which aims to attract diverse participation and preparation for the AfWASA ICE-2025. The event will spotlight the theme “Addressing Gender Bias in the WATSAN Sector,” with a keynote address from renowned advocate, politician, gender equality advocate and a senior citizen, Hon. Dr. Miria R.K Matembe, and Founder & CEO of the Hedge Group, Frank Fayo Nyakahuma.

Dr. Rose Kagwa, the network’s Patron, while addressing the taskforce guided on the importance of broadening the taskforce’s reach and encouraged the team to mobilize participants beyond NWSC, targeting inner-sector players and regional stakeholders. Her guidance also extended to logistical planning for the January meet-up and the larger AfWASA ICE 2025 conference, ensuring the events are not only impactful but also seamless.

Key task holders offered creative and logistical insights including; Eng. Zainab Mpakiraba proposed thought-provoking panel discussions to address generational gaps, professional development, and gender equity, while Ms. Elizabeth Kemigisha (Think-tank team) and Ms. Sheila Nabafu (Mobilization & Publicity) championed the finalized theme and sub-theme.

The committee agreed on practical resolutions to ensure the meet-up’s success. Additionally, the program will include sessions on overcoming workplace barriers, resilience, and accountability. The meeting concluded, with all members committed to delivering on their tasks. PW4WATSAN is set on proving that when women lead, change flows.
