Water is Life and Sanitation is Health. With this fundamental understanding, the National Water and Sewerage Team’s Commitment to providing quality Water & Sewerage services remains unwavering. In line with this vision, Mbarara Area has taken decisive action to address the issues surrounding the Kakoba Sewerage ponds.
In response to numerous complaints from stakeholders and the local community about the overwhelming stench, we have embarked on a comprehensive desludging operation. However, our efforts have revealed significant challenges that must be overcome to ensure the successful improvement of sewerage services in the area.
The offensive odor emanating from the Kakoba Sewerage ponds has been a cause for concern among residents. The issue gained further attention when Mbarara City’s Lord Mayor summoned us to his office to discuss the matter. It became apparent that the ponds were overwhelmed due to the constant dumping of waste from cesspool emptiers within and outside Mbarara City. To effectively address this problem, we needed to understand the intricacies of the sewerage system in Mbarara.
Mbarara’s sewerage system comprises three stages: the Anaerobic stage, Facultative stage, and Maturation stage. Each stage plays a crucial role in the treatment process. Realizing the urgency of the situation, our Sewerage Services Department, represented by the dedicated team from Kampala Water at Lubigi, and Bugolobi, promptly mobilized their resources on the ground. Equipped with a dredging pump machine, they began the laborious task of emptying the Anaerobic pond in the Kakoba Sewerage System.
We acknowledge the ongoing efforts of our team and the support provided by our Head Office in this demanding endeavor. Collaborating with Mbarara Area’s Quality Control Team, led by Dr. Sparks and AE Viola, we have extended our assessment to the other ponds in the region, namely Katete and Kijungu. Alas, it became evident that these ponds also require desludging. However, an alarming challenge has emerged in the form of limited space for sludge disposal. Reports indicate that the land previously allocated for this purpose has been encroached upon due to the city’s expansion and growth. This situation presents us with a daunting obstacle to overcome.
To address the issue of limited space for sludge deposition, we recognize the need for innovative solutions. Our team is actively exploring alternatives to find suitable locations for sludge disposal within the constraints of the growing city. This search requires a delicate balance between environmental considerations and the pressing need for improved sewerage services. By leveraging our expertise and engaging with relevant stakeholders, we are committed to finding a sustainable resolution.
Despite the challenges posed by limited space for sludge disposal, our team is determined to overcome these obstacles. By collaborating with experts, engaging with stakeholders, and exploring innovative solutions, we are confident in our ability to provide cleaner and healthier environments for the community. Our journey towards enhanced sewerage services is a testament to our dedication to the well-being and prosperity of Mbarara and its residents.
