A delegation from Hargeisa, Somaliland recently made a benchmarking visit to the Katosi Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) in Mukono District, Uganda. Their mission was to glean insights and best practices from the operational prowess of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).
Led by Mr. Ahmed Musa, the Director of Planning and Projects Development, the 12-member team received a warm reception from Eng. Joseph Tweheyo, the adept plant manager at Katosi. Mr. Tweheyo graciously guided them through a plethora of best practices in water treatment, plant management, and administrative protocols.
This visit stems from an ongoing collaboration between NWSC’s External Services Department and the Hargeisa Water Agency, funded by the European Union (EU). For nearly two years, this partnership has endeavored to bolster capacity and augment service delivery in Somaliland, with NWSC offering mentorship and guidance.
Championing this endeavor is Eng. Tweheyo, a key figure in facilitating this partnership who with finesse, expounded upon the Katosi DWTP’s overarching framework, refining in on crucial aspects such as water production, maintenance, SCADA systems, and plant management.
Following the enlightening presentation, the team embarked on an immersive tour of the facility, guided by Eng. Tweheyo himself. From the SCADA control room to the Water Quality Laboratory, every corner of the plant was unveiled, offering a firsthand glimpse into the intricacies of water purification and treatment.
Impressed and visibly pleased, the visitors from Somaliland marveled at NWSC’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and meticulous management practices. This firsthand encounter instilled a profound realization: “seeing is believing.” Energized by their experience, the team from Hargeisa departed with renewed vigor, poised to emulate the standards of utility management and performance set by NWSC.
