The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has once again demonstrated its commitment to water and sanitation by playing a pivotal role as a donor in a sanitation initiative. The commissioning ceremony, held on May 30, 2023, marked the launch of a garbage truck aimed at enhancing garbage disposal in Nakawa East and surrounding areas.

The commissioning ceremony saw the participation of Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya, the General Manager of Kampala Water, representing NWSC’s Managing Director. Also in attendance was Hon. Ronald Balimwezo, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa East and CEO of the Balimwezo Community Foundation (BCF). The event brought together constituents, stakeholders, the RCC Nakawa Division, Hon. Christine Kaaya (Woman MP for Kiboga), the Lord Mayor of Nakawa East, as well as area councilors.

The acquisition of the garbage truck serves as a symbol of the urgent need to improve sanitation practices and raise awareness about proper waste management. NWSC recognizes the importance of efficient waste disposal methods, particularly in relation to addressing pollution in Lake Victoria. Kampala Water relies on this vital water source, and the increasing pollution levels have resulted in higher production costs for the corporation.

Hon. Balimwezo expressed his gratitude to Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha, NWSC’s Managing Director, and other donors for their generous contribution towards the purchase of the garbage truck. He commended NWSC for their exemplary collaboration with the community in promoting a clean city. Furthermore, he acknowledged the commitment of GM Kampala Water to working hand in hand with the communities it serves to maintain good sanitation practices.

Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya, in his remarks, highlighted the significant costs associated with water treatment due to pollution. He emphasized that the garbage truck acquisition would help mitigate water contamination caused by improper garbage disposal in drainage systems that ultimately flow into Lake Victoria. Lutaaya reaffirmed NWSC’s unwavering dedication to supporting commendable initiatives in collaboration with the surrounding communities.

NWSC received recognition for their support, with the General Manager of Kampala Water being presented with an accolade on behalf of the Managing Director. Attendees also expressed their appreciation for Ms. Jocelyn, the Branch Manager of the Luzira branch, for consistently delivering excellent service to customers within her jurisdiction.

Note that other donors include but are not limited to; Mandela Millers, CIDI, AFROPLAST, and the office of the Minister of Kampala.

This initiative serves as an inspiring example of the positive impact that can be achieved when leaders actively address Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) issues. By tackling the garbage problem in Kampala City, which has contributed to frequent floods, more leaders can significantly mitigate flood and sanitation-related challenges in the capital city.

NWSC’s donation towards the acquisition of the garbage truck represents a significant step towards improving sanitation practices in Nakawa East and the surrounding areas. The collaboration between NWSC, and local leaders demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing water pollution and promoting a clean and healthy environment.

The corporation believes that through continued initiatives and partnerships, a cleaner, more sustainable future for Kampala City is achievable.
