The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has officially assumed the management of a state-of-the-art 6m3/hr borehole supply system in Kyankwanzi Town Council and its vicinities. Valued at an impressive UGX 8.1 billion, the project is set to serve approximately 22,808 people. Spearheaded by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Water and Environment and supported by the African Development Bank, this initiative is bound to meet some of the critical needs of the community.
The Kyankwanzi Mini-Water Supply System, impressively executed by M/S Vidas Engineering Service Co., has been a focal point since its inception in March 2021, and now standing at an impressive 99% completion rate, the project has undergone rigorous testing and scrutiny until the Technical Commissioning and Handover ceremony to NWSC.
Representing the Permanent Secretary during the ceremony, Mr. Richard Matua Matua, the Assistant Commissioner of the Ministry of Water and Environment, explained the project’s vital components which include; 200m3 reservoir tank at Lusozi, a generator house, pump house, borehole, 1.4km transmission main, distribution lines, water office, public and institutional toilets, private consumer connections, public StandPipes (PSPs), and auxiliary facilities such as a guard/attendant house and kitchen house.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the African Development Bank, Mr. Matua highlighted the Government of Uganda’s dedication to ensuring water accessibility. He lauded M/S Vidas Engineering Service Co. for their diligent execution of the project and urged NWSC to ensure the optimal maintenance of the facilities while expanding the network to reach more people.
Eng. Okaronon Edmund, Director Regional Operations, accepted the instruments of power on behalf of NWSC, echoing the corporation’s commitment to the efficient operation and maintenance of the new facility. Emphasizing NWSC’s customer-centric approach, Eng. Okaronon announced plans for extending water services to the surrounding areas officially designated for supply.
Disclosing NWSC’s future endeavors, Eng. Okaronon outlined upcoming initiatives, including community engagement programs and the construction of a new 3-million litre/day treatment plant in Akaapa village. This visionary project aims to address water availability challenges in the region stemming from low yields from existing boreholes.
The event drew the presence of distinguished leaders, including the Honorable Woman Member of Parliament, Resident District Commissioner, Town Clerks, and Mayors of Butemba and Kyankwanzi Town Council.
