The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Bushenyi Area, in partnership with Bushenyi District Woman MP Hon. Katusiime Annet Mugisha, has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand water access in Kakanju Subcounty. The announcement was made during the launch of piped water extensions to Kigondo A and Ryamizingo villages on January 13th 2024, a significant step in improving water coverage in the region.

The initiative is part of the Bushenyi Water Supply Augmentation Project, commonly known as the Warugo Project. Kakanju Subcounty, which hosts the treatment plant and reservoir, stands to gain substantially from these new developments. Despite being home to vital infrastructure, NWSC currently provides water to only 21 of Kakanju’s 48 villages, representing just 44% coverage. Plans are now in motion to extend services to previously underserved areas, including Kitojo Parish, which has no water connections.

During the event, Hon. Mugisha pledged to support the effort by donating a 7.5-kilometer pipe network which will benefit not only Kakanju but also neighboring Bitooma Town Council and Ruhumuro Subcounty, broadening the impact of the initiative.

During the event, Eng. Sam Kigundu, NWSC Bushenyi Area Manager, outlined the corporation’s planned interventions to improve water coverage highlighting key measures which include laying 2.5 kilometers of water mains to connect Kigondo A and B villages, integrating the Warugo network at Rubundabunzi with the older system at Kabaare, and expanding services to Rushinya Health Centre III. Additional extensions are also planned for Rushinya and Katunga parishes.

The launch drew attendance from key district leaders, including Bushenyi District Chairman Hajj Jafari Basajabalaba and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Williams Kasigazi Donanto, alongside local leaders and residents who lauded NWSC Managing Director Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha for prioritizing water access in Kakanju and pledged their unwavering support for the corporation’s efforts.

This initiative is bound to address immediate water access challenges in the area as well as set the foundation for long-term development in Kakanju Subcounty. With strategic partnerships and a clear roadmap, NWSC and its collaborators are making strides to ensure clean and reliable water for the region.
