Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), announced several critical interventions during the Kampala Water Dinner at Serena Hotel last evening, June 20th, 2024. These initiatives are aimed at resolving existing issues and ensuring the corporation meets its ambitious expansion targets.

Dr. Eng. Mugisha revealed plans to address problematic pumps by procuring new ones, and tasked Kampala Water (KW) management with ensuring the timely delivery and installation of these pumps to improve operational efficiency. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance capacity within NWSC, equipping staff with technical knowledge to reduce equipment acquisition costs and streamline operations.

He also highlighted the challenge of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in the KW region, advising on improving efficiency in both technical and commercial operations. Dr. Eng. Mugisha stressed the importance of managing meters effectively, noting that inaccuracies significantly contribute to NRW. He mentioned that management plans to introduce a new method to handle meter separations, setting a target to reduce NRW to at least 28% from May 2024’s 41%.

Dr. Eng. Mugisha further emphasized the importance of capacity building, urging the equipping of staff with skills necessary for reducing operational costs and supporting their career growth. He also advised branch managers to pay meticulous attention to figures and adopt a positive mindset to drive business growth in their regions.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Eng. Mugisha announced that auditors would be visiting the region to conduct audits as the fiscal year ends, urging the team to cooperate fully. He also mentioned that board members would schedule meetings and engagements with staff at the branch level to discuss issues such as career growth and staff satisfaction, and to offer guidance on strengthening business in the corporation.

Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya, General Manager of Kampala Water, echoed Mugisha’s sentiments, commending his leadership and pledging the KW team’s commitment to aligning with the corporation’s mission. Eng. Lutaaya emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement, stating, “We will organize Barrazas at divisional levels to interact with our customers, understand their needs, expectations, and gather feedback on NWSC services.”

The event saw all key speakers reaffirming their commitment to reducing NRW, increasing sales, and minimizing arrears, as a collective effort towards enhancing service delivery and achieving NWSC’s ambitious goals.
