The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), has been a pioneer in driving initiatives for better sanitation, hygiene, and environmental awareness in Uganda. In 2014, the corporation launched the School Water and Sanitation clubs (SWAS) with a key objective of sensitizing school going children on the significance of protecting water resources, and nurturing the environment. Building on this mission, a team led by the Kampala Water Senior Legal Office, Ms. Brownie Ebal, accompanied by Collins Bukenya and Mildred, recently paid a momentous visit to Kitante Primary School in Kampala to officiate the launch of their SWAS Assembly under the theme “Preserve the Environment for a Better Future.”

The event was graced by prominent figures from the school, including members of the School Board of Directors and the School Management, along with representatives from neighboring schools such as; Nakasero and Buganda Road Primary Schools. During this gathering, the school administration expressed their gratitude towards NWSC, particularly acknowledging the stellar leadership of their esteemed Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha. The school also lauded NWSC for its dedication in providing crucial handwashing facilities, swift responses to sewerage issues, and fostering environmental awareness among the young minds.

Ms. Ebal, in her heartfelt address, commended the school’s proactive approach in embracing the SWAS initiative and highlighted the pressing need to safeguard the environment through tree planting and other conservation efforts. Collins Bukenya also joined in, expressing appreciation for the school’s enthusiastic involvement in SWAS activities while passionately encouraging students to take ownership of their surroundings, making Uganda a better place for all.

The students themselves were brimming with enthusiasm and eagerness to contribute. They suggested an increased social media presence for SWAS by utilizing platforms like Twitter and Instagram, recognizing that these are effective channels to engage their tech-savvy generation. Their keenness to participate and create an impact was further enhanced by the visit of the SWAS team, leaving them energized and eager to invite more members to join their club.

Ms. Enid, the dedicated SWAS patron, warmly thanked the visiting team for their inspiring presence. She emphasized the profound influence such visits have on motivating club members to remain active and also to inspire others to become part of the initiative. She pledged that the club would strive for excellence in all SWAS activities, embodying their commitment to be shining examples for other schools to follow.

In a remarkable show of solidarity and mutual dedication, both NWSC and Kitante Primary School agreed to forge an enduring partnership, ensuring the continued success of SWAS activities. Such collaborations are essential for achieving the ambitious goals of environmental conservation and promoting responsible stewardship among the youth.

The visit to Kitante Primary School stands as a significant milestone in NWSC’s relentless efforts to inspire and empower the young generation to become guardians of the environment. By establishing SWAS clubs in schools and fostering a sense of ownership among students, NWSC is nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious individuals, equipped to safeguard our precious natural resources for a sustainable and brighter future.

Markedly, NWSC’s ongoing commitment to promoting environmental conservation through SWAS clubs remains an exemplary model that deserves commendation and emulation by others in the quest for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Uganda.
