In Kampala district, home of approximately 79 Universal Primary Education (UPE) and 22 Universal Secondary Education (USE), concerns have been mounting regarding the state of sanitation. The issue is further intensified by the large student populations that often overwhelm existing facilities.

During an interview with the Kampala Water Public Relations team, Hajati Aisha Namaganda, the Head teacher of Kiswa Primary School, shed light on the challenges faced by their 2218 students. She highlighted instances where students, due to the inadequate facilities, resorted to unsanitary alternatives such as relieving themselves in open areas.

Echoing these concerns, Hon. Ronald Balimwezo, the Member of Parliament of Nakawa East, emphasized the unfavorable impact of sanitation-related illnesses on student attendance and academic performance, hinting on the urgent need for improved sanitation infrastructure in educational institutions.

Against backgrounds like these, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation has over the years, intervened with the aim of aiding the sustainable access to water and sanitation, including the recently commissioned 9 sanitation facilities across schools, and markets in Kiswa. Therefore, in a bid to express their gratitude, a coalition comprising Hon. Balimwezo, Nakawa Division Mayor Mr. Tom Mugambe, six headteachers, and other community leaders lauded the NWSC for its proactive efforts in addressing this pressing issue, and commended the corporation for installing well-equipped sanitation facilities that cater to the diverse needs of students, including girls, boys, and those with disabilities.

The coalition’s appreciation was profound during sanitation facility commissioning ceremony held at Kiswa Primary School. These facilities, strategically placed across schools, markets, and public areas, boast modern amenities such as water points and well-designed shower areas, meeting contemporary sanitation standards.

Notably, institutions like Mbuya Primary School, Kansanga Primary School, Kibuli Police Children’s Primary School, Mutundwe Primary School, Lubiri Primary School, and St. Paul Primary School Nsambya, as well as markets including Kiswa and Kamwokya, have all benefited from the Kampala Water Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation 5B Package-project.
