Founded by the Global Handwashing Partnership, Global Handwashing Day is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times. It is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to advocating for handwashing with
soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
This day is commemorated every year on October 15 th , with the very first held in 2008 and over 120 million children around the world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries.
This year, National Water and Sewerage Corporation joined the cause, under the theme, “Our Future is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together”, which calls for coordinated action in actively working toward universal hand hygiene.
Led by the corporation’s Deputy Managing Director-Finance and Corporate Strategy, Sylvia Alinaitwe, an NWSC team rendezvoused at the Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga, NWSC’s inaugural celebrant of the day and donated a number of items to commemorate the day as it provides a unique impulse to institutionalize hand hygiene as a fundamental component of health and safety.
The school’s Head Mistress, Sister Regina Nabawanuka, was utterly gratified and applauded NWSC for the gesture. She used the platform to not only acknowledge the corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility, but also its impeacable service to the people in the area as she pointed out the
Lugazi Area Manager, Ms. Lydia. “Your service and hardwork is really appreciated”, stated Sr. Nabawanuka.
As we embrace the new normal, beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, our future is indeed at hand and this may explain Sr. Nabawanuka’s delight towards NWSC’s donation of handwashing tools.
DMDF&CS – Sylvia Alinaitwe, in her brief remarks, she thanked the school for being active members in School Water and Sanitation Clubs, where the children learn from at an early age to embrace, understand, discuss and resolve issues affiliated to water, sanitation and environmental conservation wholeheartedly. “We have used this day to teach people the importance of washing our hands regularly and very well,” she said. She couldn’t help but acknowledge the customer delight clearly spread by Ms. Lydia Kabasomi – AM Lugazi, and the great rapport built with the customers in the area, especially this repute school.
NWSC was also represented by Director Internal Audit – Prossy Aketch Lubowa, Manager Public Relations – Sheba Bamwine, Senior Manager Corporate Communications – Sarah Namuwenge, Manger Call Center – George Kasule and AM Lugazi – Lydia Kabasomi.
Handwashing will continue to be one of the most effective ways to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and is by far one of the most important behaviors to adopt for a healthy life. The activity is part of the Corporation’s CSR and stakeholder engagement initiatives with customers and NWSC continues to remain committed to Water and Sanitation for all.
