In preparation for the highly anticipated AFWASA Congress and Exhibition in Conakry, Guinea, scheduled from the 18th to the 22nd of February 2024, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) delegation, led by the esteemed Dr. Rose Kaggwa, played a pivotal role in shaping crucial decisions during strategic meetings. Accompanying Dr. Kaggwa were Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya, the General Manager of Kampala Water, and Dr. Irene Nansubuga Mugabi, the Senior Manager of Water Quality. Together, they assumed various responsibilities, including the formation of specialist groups, setting the stage for the future of the water management sector.

The NWSC team’s influence extended beyond their active involvement in key decision-making processes for the upcoming Congress and Exhibition. Demonstrating their commitment to progress, the delegation expressed a keen interest in joining the AFWASA Strategic Council. By seeking membership in this esteemed council, the Ugandan team aimed to further solidify their dedication to shaping the future of water management on a regional scale.

Not content with their involvement at the strategic level alone, the NWSC delegation also pursued participation in specialized groups, particularly in the fields of Marketing and Digital Communications/PR. Recognizing the transformative potential of effective communication and branding, they envisioned revolutionizing AFWASA’s image, ensuring its value proposition resonated with members and stakeholders alike. By spearheading innovative marketing strategies, the NWSC delegation sought to reshape AFWASA’s identity and enhance its influence within the industry.

During their engagement in the strategic meetings, the NWSC delegation emphasized the importance of supporting research initiatives. By prioritizing research, they aimed to bridge knowledge gaps and drive innovation in the water management sector. Additionally, the team stressed the significance of inclusion, particularly the involvement of Young Water Professionals (YWP). Recognizing the immense potential of the younger generation, they advocated for YWP structures and opportunities, nurturing the future leaders of the industry.

It is worth noting that the African Water and Sanitation Association (AFWASA) generously sponsored the entire meeting, affirming their commitment to fostering collaboration and progress in the water management sector. By providing the necessary resources, AFWASA exemplifies its dedication to empowering member nations and facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices.

As the NWSC delegation returns from these impactful meetings, they bring with them a renewed sense of purpose and determination to effect positive change in Uganda’s water management sector and the broader African region. Their involvement in shaping the upcoming AFWASA Congress and Exhibition, their aspirations to join the Strategic Council and specialized groups, and their commitment to research and inclusivity lay a solid foundation for the future of water management in Uganda.

The NWSC delegation’s active participation in the strategic meetings leading up to the AFWASA Congress and Exhibition marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s water management journey. Their vision, coupled with their expertise and unwavering commitment, positions them as catalysts for transformative change. With the generous support of AFWASA, the stage is set for a dynamic and fruitful Congress in Conakry, where the collective efforts of water management professionals will pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
