The expertise and support of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (NWSC) Legal Services department have long been essential for the corporation, ensuring effective operations, mitigating legal and regulatory challenges, and maintaining its reputation as a responsible and law-abiding entity. Something that the corporation’s management acknowledges and appreciates.

It is therefore no surprise that NWSC was proudly one of the sponsors of the inaugural Female Lawyers’ Convention organized by the Female Lawyers’ Network (FLN). Held under the theme “Redefining Gender Empowerment Through Innovation and Professionalism for Women in Law,” the convention took place earlier today, June 29th, 2024 at Hotel Africana-Kampala.

The convention aimed to redefine gender empowerment through innovation and professionalism for women in law. With a theme focused on fostering gender equality and promoting women’s rights across Africa, the event brought together legal professionals, scholars, and advocates to discuss key issues facing women in the legal profession.

Keynote speakers included; Hon. Nobert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa, Board Chairperson of FLN, who addressed the importance of gender empowerment in legal practice. Topics ranged from the role of women in industry sectors such as telecom and oil and gas, to strategies for navigating legal challenges and seizing opportunities in these fields.

Among the distinguished attendees were representatives from NWSC’s Legal Services team, including; Ebal Brownie-Principal Legal Officer, Mackline Katusiime-Senior Legal Officer, Afuwa Nalubwama-Legal Officer, and Patience Elizabeth Niwagaba-Senior Legal Officer.

Other major sponsors and attendees included; UNOC, the Electoral Commission, representatives from the Judiciary, various law firms, and organizations like Women in Energy and Extractive Network, MTN Uganda, CEHURD, and Femme Forte-Uganda.

The convention provided a platform for networking, mentorship, and knowledge exchange among women in law and aspiring female legal professionals. It highlighted the importance of fostering an ethical culture and leadership among women lawyers, aligning with NWSC’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote gender equality and empower women in professional settings.
