As the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) marks 50 years of service delivery, the Arua staff team organized a special “NWSC@50” fete to celebrate one of Africa’s finest water and waste water management utilities.
Spear headed by the Arua Area Manager, Ms. Jessica Ondoru, the colorful event was characterized by; song, poetry and cheer, local community of Ovisoni, the corporation’s B.O.D and NWSC Arua Area Staff.
The mothers of Ovisoni community went on to entertain the Board members with poems and songs of joy praising NWSC’s services as well as share some challenges they have faced in the area due to lack of water with domestic violence at the helm for delays at wells and other water sources.
The heavy rains that burst the R.Enyau banks is yet another challenge on top of the aftermath, floods. However, with the recent commissioning of the Ovisoni Water Supply System, the situation is bound to get better because with NWSC comes; clean , safe water closer to homes and better infrastructure at the water sources and in the community.
A walk down memory lane; the NWSC in 2014 launched a 25 million US dollar project to expand the volume of water supply in Arua and its surrounding areas including the construction of sewerage line aimed at addressing water needs of the people and sanitation for the greater Arua district and this way relieving the locals from travelling a minimum 10lilometers to look for clean water.
The scope of the Construction works comprised of Refurbishment and upgrading of the then water treatment plant, Rehabilitation, upgrading and expansion of the then water supply and distribution systems, increase of the storage capacity for treated water; Construct/ Install two hot pressed steel reservoirs of capacity 1700cu.m each on 10m high tower for storage of the clear water about 3400 m3, Protection of the current and future raw water sources, Development of a borehole water supply system to augment with existing water source, To rehabilitate the Arua hill reservoir and to construct water distribution network of pipe sizes ranging from DN 400mm DI pipe to 160mm upvc pipe approx. 79,000m.
To date, NWSC continues to meet the expectations of the people of Arua and enhance service delivery, a cause for celebration.
The Area Manager Jessica Ondoru thanked the BOD and Top Management for the unending strategic guidance given to the staff of NWSC and for opening employment doors for many. She furthermore pledged maximum commitment, dedication and unmatched energies towards service delivery to the local communities and the entire country at large.
The population of Arua District is approximately 200,000 with about 52% of the population being able to access piped water with Vurra sub-county standing at 0%. The NWSC is however very committed to ensuring service for all and will soon have 100% coverage.
