In a significant stride towards enhancing transparency, communication, and effective service delivery in Uganda, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, under the umbrella of the Open Government Initiative, engaged with top officials from the Government Citizen Interaction Center (GCIC) to foster collaboration between government bodies, amplify success stories, and further engage citizens in shaping public service delivery.
GCIC, operating under State House, stands as a vital nexus between the Ugandan government and its citizens, serving as a conduit for feedback and suggestions while bridging the information gap. It facilitates interactions through various channels, leveraging data analysis to inform policy decisions and interventions that improve service delivery across the nation.
Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha commenced the meeting by highlighting the pivotal role that effective communication plays in nurturing the growth and development of institutions like NWSC. Notably, NWSC has fostered a culture of openness and transparency within its workforce, fostering an environment with limited bureaucracy that has propelled its continued expansion.
Recognizing the significance of sharing success stories, Dr. Mugisha encouraged collaboration between GCIC and NWSC’s Digital team to create regular content that highlights NWSC’s journey since its inception. By doing so, the intention is to not only bolster NWSC’s image but also project a positive image of the Ugandan government. Dr. Mugisha also emphasized the need to innovate strategies for showcasing Uganda’s accomplishments to the global stage, suggesting tactics like tagging international entities to gain broader recognition.
A key insight from Dr. Mugisha’s presentation was NWSC’s entrepreneurial culture, which has been pivotal in its sustained growth over the years. Dr. Mugisha stressed that an organization devoid of an entrepreneurial mindset is at risk of faltering. NWSC’s ability to cultivate this culture within its workforce has contributed to its consistent success.
Moreover, NWSC’s proficiency in utilizing internally developed online systems and platforms has allowed the corporation to save substantial financial resources that would have otherwise been expended on procuring and outsourcing IT solutions. Dr. Mugisha underscored the importance of building in-house capacity to achieve long-term success, making a compelling case for investing in staff development.
The GCIC team, deeply appreciative of NWSC’s contributions to serving Ugandans, committed to promoting NWSC’s image through their efforts. Mrs. Marcella Karekye the Director GCIC, lauded Dr. Mugisha’s leadership in recognizing the centrality of communication in establishing and sustaining successful entities like NWSC. The collaborative efforts between NWSC and GCIC were deemed invaluable, holding the potential to not only uplift NWSC’s reputation but also bolster Uganda’s image in the digital era.
The meeting concluded on a positive note with the GCIC team expressing gratitude for Dr. Mugisha’s willingness to share NWSC’s journey and achievements. The importance of such collaborative endeavors was underscored, as they have the power to enhance Uganda’s global presence and promote the transformative services NWSC has provided to Ugandans over the years.
In an era where transparency, effective communication, and citizen engagement form the bedrock of successful governance, the partnership between NWSC and GCIC stands as a promising model that other institutions can emulate. Through sharing success stories and fostering synergies, Uganda’s journey towards improved service delivery and public engagement is poised to achieve even greater heights.
