NWSC, A BENCHMARK FOR GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s Managing Director, Dr Eng. Silver Mugisha, delivered a key note address to Government of Uganda Communicators at the ongoing Government of Uganda Communicators retreat happening at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi.

The 2-weeks retreat was organized by the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance on request by the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta. T. Museveni and is aimed at enhancing leadership and communication skills of the Government spokespersons.

Under phase one, the retreat attracted over 109 Government communicators and more are expected to attend the upcoming retreats being organized.

During said retreat, NWSC was identified as one of the best Government entities that has excelled in communicating Government programs and for that reason, was selected to share its best practices. Delivering the key note address, the corporation’s Managing Dr Eng. Silver Mugisha discussed the need for ideology and importance of government communicators in publicising key government programs. He shared the corporation’s vision, mission, success stories over the past years and other ongoing strategic planning processes all aimed at delivering water for all.

In the address, he discussed the 10 practical lessons of effective communication- A case of NWSC, thus; Emphasis on practical actions rather than more words, in service delivery, people want real solutions and not promises, you must keep a close eye on what can get wrong in your organization, cost- benefit analysis of a communication method is key, creating a communication action plan maintains clarity and focus, community strategy should be entity specific- the individual knowledge should be a guide, the accounting officer is the most believed communication: optimize modus operandi, a communication head must be conversant with actions and long term plans of the entity, Digital communication and agility are key, and, financing of communication plans should not blur action in the entity that is to say resources should not be wasted on PR material when it can he sunk into service delivery.

Dr Eng. Silver further tipped the communicators on what they can do to build the Uganda brand and their work place brands.
