NAKASONGOLA GETS AN ADDITIONAL 7.8MILLION LITRES OF WATER PER DAY

The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Water and Environment, has commissioned a new 7.8 million litres per day Water Treatment Plant in Nakasongola.
 
This is part of the Strategic Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Programme aimed at providing safe water and hygienic sanitation for the urban population by 2030.
 
The UGX 27 billion Nakasongora Water Supply and Sanitation Project (Phase 1), financed by the African Development Bank, was executed by M/S Anhui Sijian Holding Co. Ltd. under the supervision of the Ministry of Water and Environment. 
 
Note that, the project targets a population of about 180,000 people and is characterised by; a 7.8 million litre/day water treatment plant on Lake Kyoga, 19km of treated water pumping mains, a 400m3 reservoir tank, 70km of distribution pipelines, and 700 private consumer service connections, 50 public standpipes, a public toilet in Nakasongola TC and Kibuye Trading Centre.
While presiding over the Technical Commissioning and Handover ceremony, the Permanent Secretary MWE, Mr. Alfred Okidi reiterated that GoU has stepped up efforts to ensure that all Ugandans have access to reliable water supply and adequate sanitation services, by building strategic partnerships with funders like the African Development Bank. He thanked the Bank for the support it has extended to the water sector over the last couple of years, and looked forward to more support in the future. 
He also appreciated Contractor for executing the works diligently and delivering a high quality product on time. He urged NWSC to ensure that the facilities are maintained well and kept in a good working condition, in addition to intensifying the network to serve as many people as possible.  
 
The system was handed over to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation for operation, and the corporation pledged to maintain and operate it efficiently while extending water to surrounding areas. The government urged the community to safeguard the infrastructure and avoid vandalism.
 
Representating the NWSC Managing Director at the handover/takeover ceremony was the Senior Manager Operations-Central Region, Eng. Moses Bigabwa. After receiving the instruments of power from the PS Ministry of Water and Environment, Eng. Bigabwa reiterated NWSC’s commitment to ensuring that the new Facility is well maintained and operated efficiently. 
 
He stressed that NWSC is customer driven, operating under its motto “The customer is the reason we exist”. He affirmed that on this basis, water will be extended to all the sorrounding areas.
