Dr. Silver Mugisha, the Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), recently delivered a thought-provoking speech at the 6th Annual Law Conference hosted by the Uganda Law Society (ULS). In his engaging address, Dr. Mugisha outlined key strategies to redefine legal practice in the modern era of disruption, emphasizing the benefits of safety compliance for both employees and employers.

Amidst a panel of influential industrial leaders, including Aga Sekalala Junior (CEO of Ugandachick), Fabian Kasi (Managing Director of Centenary Bank), and Mona Sebulila (CEO of aBi finance), Dr. Mugisha urged legal professionals to expand their horizons beyond the realm of rule-based legal aspects. He highlighted the significance of instilling a spirit of discipline, entrepreneurship, and business analytics within organizations.

One of the central themes of Dr. Mugisha’s address was the vital role lawyers can play in supporting compliance initiatives. He encouraged legal minds to join forces with organizations like NWSC to tackle compliance challenges, devise innovative business approaches, and contribute to risk management strategies. By doing so, lawyers can actively contribute to safeguarding the integrity of the business landscape.

In his address, Dr. Mugisha underlined the value of differentiation in the professional realm. Drawing from NWSC’s unique operational model as a public institution with a private-like approach, he emphasized the transformative power of standing out from the crowd. “Don’t merely be a lawyer,” he urged, “identify your distinctiveness within the legal landscape.”

Dr. Mugisha also tackled the ethical dimension of legal practice. He discouraged manipulative tactics and double-dealing, highlighting the importance of fostering genuine client-lawyer relationships built on trust.

Business analytical skills emerged as a recurring theme throughout the speech. Dr. Mugisha stressed the pivotal role of these skills in effective business management. “You cannot manage what you don’t know,” he asserted, advocating that lawyers equip themselves with analytical capabilities to make informed decisions and navigate the business world with finesse.

The event also saw contributions from other influential figures. Director of Criminal Investigations (CID) Tom Magambo Rwabudongo applauded lawyers for their role in societal development and safety. Dr. Joseph Muvawala, Executive Director of the National Planning Authority (NPA), urged the ULS to champion laws conducive to economic growth.

Amidst discussions on the legal fraternity’s potential, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka emphasized ethical standards and professionalism. He called for a positive shift in the fraternity’s image, urging practitioners to align with the country’s greater interests.

Simply put, the 6th Annual Law Conference illuminated pathways for legal professionals to thrive in the era of disruption. Dr. Mugisha’s insights showcased the significance of safety compliance for both employees and employers, while also shedding light on ethical conduct and the power of business analytics. It is also in order to say that the event was a testament to the Uganda Law Society’s commitment to advancing the legal profession in alignment with evolving business landscapes.
