Kampala Water (KW) is dedicated to business growth and providing exceptional customer service. However, it is facing a significant obstacle in its pursuit of growth: water loss caused by various factors such as meter tampering, illegal connections and reconnections, leaks/bursts, and more.

In order to contribute to the corporation’s objectives, management has implemented drastic changes aimed at improving metering efficiency, as it is a key factor affecting performance.

Recently, KW replaced traditional mechanical meters with ultrasonic meters, particularly for bulk water sellers, with the intention of addressing metering inefficiency and combating Non-Revenue Water (NRW).

To ensure that staff are well-versed in operating the new metering system, Mr. Gilbert Muhwezi from the water loss department conducted thorough training for over six employees. The training focused on imparting the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage these meters and avoid pitfalls.

The one-day on-the-job training involved technical supervisors, plumbers, engineers, and others from the Opportunity Account Drive, a newly launched initiative aimed at reducing NRW in the region. The teams visited two locations, one on 4th Street in the industrial area and another along Gayaza Road, where they took notes and exchanged thoughts on performance. This exercise aimed to maximize their understanding of the different features of the ultrasonic meters and their respective roles.

According to Mr. Muhwezi, “The training was designed to create a dedicated and knowledgeable team capable of combating water theft by sharpening their skills.”

“Now that we have a clear understanding of these meters, it is our responsibility to demonstrate professionalism, work with honesty, and conduct regular inspections of these meters,” he added.

On behalf of the trainees, Ms. Vicar Naggirinya expressed gratitude to management for embracing technology in the fight against water losses. She also pledged to address metering inaccuracy, recognizing its impact on KW’s business.

KW continues to exhibit unwavering efforts to grow its business and combat the obstacles hindering regional business growth.
