In a rather significant breakthrough, the Kampala Water (KW) Kamwokya Branch recently uncovered an elaborate scheme involving illegal water consumption at Kalerwe Abattoirs after an investigation, carried out by a dedicated team comprising the Branch Engineer, Commercial Officer, Legal Officer, and three plumbers, shed light on suspicious consumption trends in the area.
The team focused its attention on PR 21/14/18/94, the premises affiliated to Kishita Young Farmers LTD. Despite the meter appearing intact, a closer inspection revealed a pipe DN25 directly connecting the overhead tank to the main water supply line, an alarming case of a meter bypass.
With immediate action, the illicit connections were severed from the main supply, the meter was removed, and the customer received an ICN. Simultaneously, the customer was advised to report to the KW Kamwokya Branch Office for further clarification and resolution.
Recognizing the severity of the matter, the KW Kamwokya Branch promptly reported the case to the police, under reference number REF: 12/12/01/2024.
The discovery serves as a reminder of the importance of constant monitoring and swift action to preserve the integrity of water distribution systems.
Notably, such instances of illegal water consumption not only impact the utility’s revenue but also pose risks to the entire community by disrupting the regular water supply. It goes without saying that the Kamwokya Branch’s proactive approach sets a precedent for other branches especially with the recent Non-Revenue Water Trends in the Greater Kampala Water region.
