KAMPALA WATER STRATEGIZES INITIATIVES TO OVERCOME BUGOLOBI FLATS WATER WOES

Kampala Water (KW) has taken measures to tackle the persistent water supply challenges faced by Bugolobi Flats, a housing hub in Kampala City. The difficulties arose primarily due to ongoing roadworks and disruptions in the area, prompting a swift response from KW led by Ms. Irene Mwase, the Senior Manager-Legal Services.

A comprehensive meeting was convened, characterized by Condominium Managers, local leaders, and stakeholders to address the pressing issue of the unreliable water supply. The community’s heavy reliance on direct mains, particularly during emergencies, clearly depicted the necessity for a sustainable solution.

Ms. Mwase, leveraging her legal expertise, guided focused discussions during the meeting, and a collaborative effort aimed at identifying crucial factors for resolving the water supply challenges ensued. Among the key strategies was the preparation of individual Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) by each condominium so as to ensure accountability for all parties involved.

Notably, the dormant reservoirs located within the condominiums were recognized as potential solutions to enhance water storage capacity and all parties agreed on a restoration plan.

Other resolutions reached at the conclusion of the meeting are as follows: A follow-up is required regarding a designated section that National Housing provided for NWSC. The preparation of the MOUs is set to proceed, and immediate action will commence on the restoration works for the tanks serving Blocks 1-10. To address ownership issues, the contested tanks must first undergo clearance with National Housing. All parties concurred that NWSC can assume management responsibilities for the tanks and water supply while ownership matters are being resolved. Additionally, a forthcoming meeting between the Legal Services Department of Kampala Water and National Housing is scheduled to discuss the remaining two tanks.
