In the wake of the unfortunate fire incident at a city house in Kampala City on December 11th, 2023, the police stated that the absence of fire hydrants hindered their prompt response in containing the flames and preventing further escalation. Responding to this concern, teams from the Kampala Water (KW) took swift action to proactively assess the status of fire hydrants strategically placed throughout the city.

Led by Senior Manager of Water Supply, Eng. Francis Kateeba, the teams undertook a meticulous inspection, focusing on the functionality and accessibility of the city’s over 500 fire hydrants.

Commencing their evaluation at the fire hydrant opposite Social Security House, the teams followed a strategic path along Colville Street, stopping at the hydrant opposite Communications House. Their journey continued to the hydrant near the National Social Security Fund building (NSSF), progressed to the one adjacent to New Pioneer Mall, between Mabirizi Plaza and Mapeera Buildings, and concluded with the hydrant situated about 70 meters from the city house.

The teams further explored fire hydrants near key locations such as the Central Police Station (CPS), positioned strategically between the High Court and the Ministry of Gender and Labor. Continuing their thorough inspection, they moved to hydrants along Lumumba Avenue, Speke Road, and the one near the old taxi park, concluding with the installation opposite the Public Service building.

Notably, KW emphasizes collaboration with various stakeholders, as all strategically placed fire hydrants are marked on the roadmap shared with the fire police. This collaborative effort ensures a coordinated response in case of emergencies as KW remains steadfast in its commitment to fortifying the city’s preparedness for unforeseen events.
