Leaders in Kakumiro District have renewed their confidence in the proposed water supply project following a meeting with the Board of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025.

The Board, led by Chairman Eng. Dr Badru Kiggundu, met with district officials to outline plans for the Kakumiro Water Improvement Project and endorse NWSC’s commitment to improving service delivery in the area.

District leaders, including RDC Mr Peter Bisoborwa, LCV Chairperson Mr Joseph Sentogo, Deputy CAO Ms Enid Kajumba, and DPC Mr Morice Niyonzima, welcomed the engagement and acknowledged NWSC’s efforts to improve access. However, they also noted challenges, especially in managing the shift from free water sources to a paid utility system, a transition that has not been smooth for many communities.

The RDC also used the platform to raise the issue of environmental degradation, urging NWSC to take an active role in sensitising communities about protecting water sources. He stressed that safeguarding the environment should go hand in hand with the expansion of water infrastructure.

Responding to the wider concerns around access and sustainability, Dr Kiggundu confirmed that detailed designs for the Kakumiro Water Supply Project had been completed and added that the corporation is in the advanced stages of securing funding, after which construction will commence.

He also pointed out that the project will create job opportunities for the local community during implementation and operation phases. Dr Kiggundu then closed the meeting with an acknowledgement of the district’s support to NWSC, pledging the Corporation’s readiness to work with local leadership.

“This is a practical step forward. The groundwork is in place, and we’re focused on execution while working hand in hand with you, our stakeholders,” he said.
