he long-awaited Kagera Water Works project has reached a major milestone, with water successfully pumped from the Kabingo booster to the Bihunya tank for the first time, bring the communities in and around Mbarara are closer than ever to receiving improved water supply.
A delegation including the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (NWSC) General Manager Mbarara Area, the Manager Commercial Operations, the Principal Human Resources Officer, and the Principal Surveyor visited the project site to assess progress. It is then that they confirmed that water abstraction, treatment, and lifting to the Kabingo booster are fully operational and that the final stretch, delivering water to the Boma tank, is the last hurdle before full distribution can begin.
During the site visit, the team inspected ongoing works, including the pipeline passing Bank of Uganda, which is nearing completion, and the line running through the golf course en route to the Boma tank, which is also almost finished. Once these are complete, the long-standing water challenges faced by residents will soon be eased.
Equally encouraging is the readiness of NWSC staff who are undergoing intensive training to take charge of plant operations, especially after Mr. Khan, the commissioning engineer overseeing the training, praised the team’s commitment, saying, “I am very happy and confident that the team is ready and can handle operations here.”
The visit also showed the dedication of the on-ground team, who demonstrated their mastery of each stage of the plant’s operations. With visible progress, stakeholders expressed optimism that the wait for improved water supply is almost over.
NWSC is committed to “Water for All.”
