The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Gulu Area team, led by Area Manager Fred Busingye, Project Engineer Kennedy Geria, and Sogea Satom Project Manager, joined forces with Gulu City Council leadership to discuss the transformative Prepaid Metering System (PPM), a central initiative under Package 1 of the Karuma-Gulu Water Project.
Hosted by Mayor Alfred Okwonga, the meeting included the Deputy City Town Clerk and the Secretary for Education and Health. Convened at the Mayor’s invitation, the discussions focused on the progress and community engagement needed to ensure the success of the PPM initiative.
Mayor Okwonga expressed gratitude to NWSC and Sogea Satom for their commitment to addressing water access challenges in Gulu City. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between city leadership and project implementers to raise public awareness and ensure the community’s active participation. “The Karuma-Gulu Water Project is a game-changer for Gulu. I pledge my support and will mobilize local leadership to work closely with NWSC at every stage of this transformative project,” the Mayor remarked.
Responding to the Mayor’s inquiries, Eng. Kennedy Geria provided a comprehensive update on the PPM installation. He revealed that 140 prepaid systems have been earmarked for deployment in collaboration with LC1 leaders, targeting underserved communities where piped water is unaffordable. Foundations for 20 units have already been completed, with the remainder slated for completion by the end of January 2025. All equipment has been procured and is set to arrive in Gulu by week’s end, enabling the full installation by mid-February 2025.
Fred Busingye restated NWSC’s commitment to enhancing water supply in Gulu through the Karuma Project, which has already begun delivering water to the city. He highlighted that the project is currently in its defects and liability period, to ensure its long-term quality and sustainability.
The successful implementation of the Prepaid Metering System, alongside the broader Karuma-Gulu Water Project, promises to revolutionize water infrastructure and service delivery in Gulu City, marking a significant leap forward in addressing the region’s water challenges.
