The National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (NWSC) mission to reshape the way Kampala’s most underserved communities access clean water continues with a focused push to improve affordability, reliability and sustainability of water in informal settlements. The NWSC’s recent efforts under the KW WATSAN (Kampala Water – Water and Sanitation) package 5b project have reached one of Kampala’s most densely populated neighborhoods, Bwaise.
On October 30th, 2024, NWSC’s Urban Pro-Poor team began a sweeping registration drive in Bwaise, enrolling over 700 residents for prepaid meter tokens. The exercise, which spanned a week, included the installation of new meters and the upgrade of outdated ones to modern Susteq models, known for their efficiency and user-friendly design. These upgrades, the corporation believes will provide residents with a more stable and manageable water supply, directly addressing longstanding water challenges in the area.
The introduction of prepaid meters in Bwaise is significant intervention for thousands of families in informal settlements who have often struggled with water insecurity. NWSC’s prepaid system allows users to pay only for the water they consume, helping low-income households avoid unexpected bills and better manage their expenses. This initiative, aimed at low-income neighborhoods across Kampala, is part of NWSC’s broader plan to bridge water access gaps in urban communities.
For Bwaise residents, many of whom previously relied on irregular and often costly water sources, the new meters are a significant step toward a more dignified standard of living. The NWSC project also reflects the organization’s commitment to expanding its customer base while ensuring access to basic resources, a dual focus that is expected to not only enhance NWSC’s revenue but also uplift the quality of life in vulnerable communities.
According to NWSC representatives, the project’s impact extends beyond Bwaise. Similar initiatives are underway across Kampala as part of the KW WATSAN project, each tailored to meet the unique needs of urban poor populations. By engaging directly with these communities, NWSC is implementing solutions designed to last, ensuring that access to water is both affordable and sustainable.
