The Kampala Water (KW) Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation (LV WATSAN) Package 5b project is advancing rather well with the implementation of the Susteq prepaid meter installation in Kamwokya and Kyebando. Characterised by a collaborative effort involving the KW Urban Pro-Poor branch, Fichtner Water and Transport, and Monitoring & Evaluation Associates, the initiative has entered a crucial phase of community engagement to pinpoint optimal locations for the prepaid meters.

The dedicated team, working in tandem with local leaders, embarked on visits to various zones, including Mulimira, Kisenyi-1, Church area, Court Africa in Kamwokya, and Kyebando. Through meaningful interactions with the community, over 20 installation points have been successfully identified, benefiting approximately 300 individuals.

What sets this initiative apart is its meticulous consideration of vital factors such as informal settlement patterns, economic status, proximity to water sources, and land ownership. This tailored approach ensures that the installation of prepaid meters aligns seamlessly with the specific characteristics and needs of each area, promoting efficiency and community-centric solutions.

The adoption of this community-driven strategy not only guarantees the effective implementation of prepaid meters but also highlights the project’s commitment to inclusivity. By being responsive to the unique challenges faced by each community, the project is fostering a sense of ownership and involvement among residents.

With an ambitious target of installing 2600 prepaid meters, this project represents a substantial leap forward in addressing water and sanitation challenges in Kampala’s urban pro-poor areas.
