The Adjumani Water Supply and Sanitation Project is steadily reshaping access to clean water and sanitation across Adjumani district, marking a major step forward for both host communities and refugees.
Led by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), the project has reached 50% completion and is targeting a wide catchment that includes Adjumani Town Council, Pakele Town Council, Ciforo, Adropi, Dzaipi sub-counties, and the refugee settlements of Olua, Nyumanzi, and Pagirinya.
At its core is a commitment to sustainable, reliable water and sanitation services that will serve both current and future generations. A very significant component of this commitment is the River Nile, where a new raw water intake is being built to draw up to 12,000 cubic meters of water each day. This supply will be channeled through an 8.8-kilometer pipeline to a cutting-edge treatment plant, initially set to produce 4,000 cubic meters daily, with capacity to expand as demand grows. From there, water will travel through 22 kilometers of transmission mains, laying the foundation for a dependable supply chain from source to tap.
Notably, five elevated steel reservoirs, together holding 1,155 cubic meters, are under construction to store treated water and maintain steady pressure across the network. Meanwhile, 52 kilometers of distribution mains are being laid to connect households, institutions, and public spaces, extending clean water access to even the most remote areas.
To bolster the system, three high-capacity borehole pumps, each delivering 180 cubic meters per hour, are being installed to supplement the supply and safeguard continuity.
The project’s scope is even more impressive after the consideration of the “Urban Poor”, with seven public toilets being constructed at key locations to improve sanitation, alongside a faecal sludge treatment plant designed to safely process 3.6 cubic meters of waste daily, both critical investments in community health and environmental protection.
Construction is being carried out by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), under the supervision of SHAH Technical Consultants Pvt Ltd, with additional support from DON Consult Ltd, NETWAS (TZ) Ltd, WSS Services Ltd, and NWSC’s in-house technical teams. Since breaking ground on April 3rd, 2024, work has progressed steadily, staying on track for completion by October 2nd, 2025.
For the people of Adjumani, offers a pathway to dignity, safety, and opportunity through dependable water and sanitation.
