KCCA is actively enhancing Kampala’s road network to embrace the concept of a smart city. Road rehabilitation projects are in progress across the city, including Busabala road, Shimon, and Old Port Bell.
However, a concerning issue has emerged – some contractors are deliberately damaging NWSC pipes during road construction, causing water supply disruptions and financial losses for NWSC, contributing to NRW.
Recently, Kampala Water (KW) held a crucial meeting with KCCA officials, contractors, and branch engineers to address this challenge and reduce water loss due to pipe damage.
Eng. Francis Kateeba, the Senior Manager Water Supply, urged contractors to promptly inform NWSC about any pipe damage and collaborate to minimize water wastage. He stressed the importance of coordinating fixtures, connections, and tapings with NWSC.
Moreover, he cautioned KW engineers not to use NWSC materials to fix leakages caused by relocation works and instructed them to bill the contractors for any materials used. Eng Kateeba also raised concerns about contractors deliberately cutting pipes and warned against illegal connections and re-tapping relocated lines without NWSC supervision.
The meeting highlighted the necessity of communication and collaboration between all parties involved in road construction and water supply management in the Kampala metropolitan area.
