In a significant move within the public health and sanitation sector, Kampala Water (KW) recently took the initiative to engage with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in a crucial meeting. Represented by the General Manager, Eng. Mahmood Lutaya, Senior Manager CBD, Ms. Annet Kukunda, and Branch Manager Kisenyi, Ms. Babra Ariho, KW aimed to address pressing issues and explore potential collaborations between the two entities.
At the heart of the discussions was the outstanding debt owed by KCCA across various accounts in Kampala, totaling approximately 680 million Ugandan shillings. KW representatives emphasized the importance of timely settlement to maintain a robust financial system, recognizing the impact it has on the delivery of uninterrupted services.
During the meeting, KW proposed the streamlining of sewerage connections in alignment with KCCA’s physical planning regulations. This strategic approach aims to gradually eliminate septic tanks, thus preventing contamination and contributing to improved sanitation in the area.
Additionally, KW presented a collaboration proposal to KCCA regarding the recovery of outstanding payments from arcade businesses in the CBD. These establishments owed approximately 1.3 billion Ugandan shillings for sewer services. The focus of the collaboration would be to ensure that these businesses fulfill their obligations and contribute to the financial stability of the water and sanitation infrastructure.
In response, KCCA pledged to closely collaborate with KW in delivering clean and safe water while maximizing usage and connection to the sewer grid. Recognizing the significance of engaging landlords as key stakeholders in the city, both entities agreed to maintain a productive working relationship to facilitate public health initiatives.
Eng. Lutaya, reiterated the Corporation’s unwavering commitment to providing uninterrupted service to all properties. He urged KCCA to fulfill its obligations by promptly settling outstanding dues. Furthermore, he expressed appreciation to the authority for the ongoing partnership and the positive working relationship established thus far.
Through these collaborative efforts, KW and KCCA aim to enhance service delivery, promote cleanliness, and safeguard the well-being of the public. By addressing outstanding arrears and fostering collaborations, both entities are actively working towards improving the public health and sanitation infrastructure in Kampala.
