HOW TO APPLY FOR A SEWER CONNECTION : ENSURING SANITATION, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

A sewer connection refers to the physical connection between a property or building and the public sewer system. It allows for the proper and controlled disposal of wastewater generated within the property.

A sewer connection plays a crucial role in maintaining public health, sanitation, environmental sustainability and hygiene in communities.

When a property is connected to the sewer system, wastewater, including water from toilets, sinks, showers, and other drains, flows through pipes within the property and into the public sewer network.

The sewer connection ensures that the wastewater is safely transported away from the property to a centralized wastewater treatment facility i.e Bugolobi wastewater treatment plant, Lubigi sewage treatment plant, Kiruddu hospital treatment system etc.

The purpose of a sewer connection is to facilitate the proper management and disposal of wastewater in a centralized and regulated manner. It helps prevent the discharge of untreated or poorly treated wastewater into the environment, protecting public health, water resources, and ecosystems.

Sewer connections also support community development by providing reliable and efficient wastewater infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

Applying for a sewer connection typically involves several steps, which may vary depending on the specific requirements of National Water and Sewerage Corporation. Here is a general outline of the process:

First and foremost the property of the interested customer must be within the 150m radius of the sewer network and one can inquire from their respective Branch office.

Customer’s premises are surveyed and an initial survey report is made. After which an application form is filled and the customer account details are provided ( copy of recent water bills to be attached ).

Quotation and payment advice slip is generated and the customer makes payment through any NWSC associated banks.

Once the payment is completed the Corporation obtains permission from relevant authorities ( UNRA, KCCA, NITA, UPF ) and finally the contractor is deployed to execute the works.

The new sewer connection process is never tedious with NWSC as the corporation strives to serve the country using more innovative ways from time to time.

This application guide can also be accessed on the NWSC website ( https://www.nwsc.co.ug/new-sewer-connection/ ).

The Corporation continues to ensure that sewer connections play a crucial role in promoting sanitation, protecting public health, and preserving the environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
