KAMPALA WATER’S STRATEGIC EFFORTS TO CONTINUE CRACK DOWN ON NON-REVENUE WATER

In response to Archbishop Ssemwogerere’s heartfelt appeal, Kampala Water (KW) has taken decisive action to address the pressing issues of sanitation and access to clean water in Nkumba village, located in Katabi Town Council, Entebbe Municipality.

Recognizing the challenges faced by the community, particularly the estimated 30 percent of urban poor residents, Eng. Francis Kateeba, the Kampala Water-Senior Manager Water Supply, accompanied by Technical Supervisor, Mr. Richard, embarked on a comprehensive inspection to identify critical areas that required immediate attention.

During their visit, the team engaged with local leaders, including Mr. Peter Mponye, the LC 1 representative, who highlighted the dire circumstances faced by the community. He pointed out the high population density of the area, predominantly composed of middle and low-income earners who struggle to afford even a 20-liter jerrycan of water from expensive vendors. In times of water scarcity, residents resort to fetching water from unprotected spring wells, which poses significant health risks.

One of the pressing concerns raised by Mr. Mponye was the improper disposal of waste, with trenches being transformed into makeshift garbage collection sites. This unhygienic practice, combined with runoff water during rainy periods, leads to contamination of the water sources, further exacerbating the health hazards faced by the villagers.

Eng. Kateeba proposed a series of initiatives, including raising the well’s height to prevent contamination from trench water, installing protective fencing around the wells, and adding more water outlets to improve access for the residents.

In addition to the physical interventions, Eng. Kateeba emphasized the importance of environmental protection and encouraged the Local Council to take an active role in preserving the ecosystem. He underscored the detrimental effects of poorly managed environments, particularly the risks associated with water pollution.

The community members present during the inspection expressed heartfelt gratitude to NWSC for their immediate response to the Archbishop’s appeal and for prioritizing customer satisfaction. They recognized the Corporation’s commitment to improving their lives by ensuring access to clean and safe water, as well as better sanitation facilities.

As KW commences the implementation of the proposed improvements, six villages namely; Bukolwa, Kitinda, Bufulu, Nkumba Central, Nalulemu, and Sam Mpanga, eagerly anticipate the positive impact on their daily lives.

With enhanced access to clean water and improved sanitation facilities, these communities can look forward to embracing better sanitation practices and a healthier environment.
