According to the Uganda Police annual crime report for the year 2022, one thousand two hundres fifty-eight (1,258) fire emergencies were reported. In response to this alarming statistic, the Uganda Police took proactive measures to ensure the safety of its assets and personnel within the workplace. In line with this, the manager of the Katosi Drinking Water Treatment Plant, Mr. Joseph Tweheyo along with the Senior Human Resource Officer, (SHRO), Mr. Abu Isabirye partnered with Global Safety Fire Services to conduct a comprehensive and standardized interactive fire drills training.

The training session covered a range of crucial topics, including different types of fires and extinguishers, fire control techniques, firefighting equipment usage, and the execution of effective evacuation plans in case of a fire outbreak. By practicing what they must do to safely leave a building during a fire, the participants engaged in what is commonly known as a “fire drill,” as defined by the Cambridge dictionary.

During the training, Mr. John Ssimwe, the Operations Manager of Global Safety Fire Services, shared valuable fire prevention techniques. He emphasized the importance of considering the wind direction when using a fire extinguisher and advised maintaining a safe distance from the fire. Furthermore, Mr. Ssimwe cautioned against fighting fires if there is excessive smoke or if the fire is rapidly spreading, highlighting the potential dangers associated with such situations.

Recognizing the devastating consequences and extensive damage caused by fires, Mr. Isabirye emphasized the role of the Human Resource Department in ensuring a safe working environment for staff members. He stressed that fostering preparedness among firefighters in the workplace is crucial for preventing accidents resulting from negligence, electrical faults, and a lack of knowledge about fire safety, among other factors.

“Let us be vigilant and report any risks or potential hazards in the environment,” urged Mr. Tweheyo, underlining the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a safe workplace.

In conclusion, Mr. Isabirye expressed his gratitude to the team from Global Safety Fire Services for dedicating their time to share their expertise with his staff. He also encouraged employees to remain vigilant and attentive while carrying out their duties, emphasizing the significance of workplace safety.

Overall, this collaborative effort between the Uganda Police, the SHRO, the manager of the Katosi Drinking Water Treatment Plant, and Global Safety Fire Services is an essential step towards enhancing workplace safety and preventing fire-related accidents. By equipping the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills, this training aims to create a safer environment for all staff members, reducing the potential risks and ensuring the well-being of everyone involved.
