Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, the Chairperson of the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), has urged employers to prioritize the well-being of employees and build an environment in which they feel safe, engaged, inspired, and productive.

Speaking at the International Labour Day, Dr. Mugisha said that positive culture in the workplace should form the core of any organization, as it fosters a sense of pride and ownership among employees, leading to increased opportunities for business success.

Alluding to this year’s Labour Day theme; “promoting positive work culture and ethics: a prerequisite for increased investment, employment opportunities, and household incomes”, Dr. Eng. Mugisha stated that the commemoration aligns well with FUE’s mission to bolster employers’ competitiveness.

He also encouraged employers to put in place policies that promote respect, trust, empathy, and career development for their employees.

Notably, FUE conducts an Employer of the Year Awards Survey every year to recognize employers who have excelled in implementing outstanding Human Resource policies and best practices that promote decent work and responsible business. The information collected from the survey is analyzed to produce an ‘Employee Voice Report’ to help employers promote self-regulation and peer-to-peer benchmarking and learning from one another for improvement.

Dr. Mugisha also called for collective effort and intelligence for effective policy responses to promote decent work among informal sector workers and support the steady transition of informal economy businesses to formality.
