Sanitation and cleanliness are among the humblest of the civic virtues, and it is easy to underestimate their significance. The cliché goes that sanitation is health, and probably no one understands this better than Kampala Water’s Sewerage Services Department (SSD).

In continuation of their sanitation promotion program, the SSD hit Kawempe division with the aim of ensuring that the greater Kampala metropolitan region is clean and healthy.

Led by the Senior Manager Sewer Services, Eng. James Miiro Maiteki, the team comprising the Network Manager-Eng. Angelo Kwitonda, the Lubigi Sewer Plant Manager-Ronald Sakaya and Plant Superintendent- Mr. Andrew partnered with a team of private entrepreneurs (cesspool emptier truck owners) to carry out emptying of major On-Site Sanitation Technologies (OSS) in Kawempe as well as the Fish Market around Bwaise and Dembe Market.

The multi-faceted program saw the cesspool trucks make 15 trips, in no small part due to fuel provided by NWSC. This ensured that many of the public toilets in the markets were given a fresh leash on life, much to the appreciation of the community.

Coupled with direct involvement of the SSD staff, the teams also sensitized community members. Ensuring that work done on the day won’t stop there, but spread and become a self-sustaining activity.

NWSC is committed to Water and Sanitation for All.
