NWSC EMBARKS ON THE EAST AFRICAN CRUDE OIL PIPELINE (EACOP) FACILITIES WATER SUPPLY DESIGNS

Following a meeting held between National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Total Energies regarding the provision of adequate and reliable water supply services to East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Project Sites in Kyotera, Sembabule, and Mubende, a team from NWSC Head Office visited the first site in Kyotera to start on the detailed designs.

The exercise started with a visit to the proposed Main Camp and Pipe Yard-4 Site in Kyotera, which will serve as the central material storage and dispatch point for all imports through Tanzania to Uganda. At the site, the layout was discussed, topography & existing site conditions appreciated, Oil-pipeline route noted, and final water connection point picked.

The Camp expected to house over 1,000 people is projected to consume an average of 200,000 litres of water per day. From the visit to the NWSC facilities, it was noted that the existing NWSC infrastructure cannot meet this demand. As such, it was proposed to drill and develop two (02) additional boreholes which shall deliver water to a central reservoir supplying the Camp.

The potential reservoir site and boreholes sites were also visited and elevations taken, including assessment of nearby power sources, among others. The pipeline routes options were also discussed and agreed on. The team shall proceed to document and prepare detailed designs, cost estimates, and implementation arrangements as required.

The construction works are expected to commence in April 2022, in preparation for the Camp establishment slated for July 2022. The execise has coincided with the signature of the Final Investment Decision between the Government of Uganda and the heads of France’s TotalEnergies and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, paving way for the commencement of the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline for the export of Oil to the international market. NWSC is indeed proud to be part of this partnership which shall see Uganda’s economy transformed.

Representing TotalEnergies/EACOP in the field was Lawrence Ssempagi (Regulatory Compliance Uganda Head) wheras NWSC side was led by Eng. Denis Taremwa (SMIP&D) accompanied by the Kyotera Area Manager, Moses Kisiibo, Nicholas Muwanga (Principal Projects Engineer), Kuteesa John (Area Engineer), Cream Treasure (Senior PR Central Region), and Barbra Nshuti (Customer Relations Officer- Head office).
