MINISTER OF STATE FOR WATER MAKES FIRST “WATER FOR ALL” DUTY CALL

The newly appointed Minister of State for Water, Hon. Aisha Sekkindi yesterday made her inaugural visit to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation memorable as she toured the largest sewerage treatment plant in East and Central Africa, at Bugolobi.

Joining the corporation’s commitment to “Water for All”, Hon Sekkindi echoed the Ministry’s commitment towards excellent water and sewerage services for all Ugandans across the country hinting on the fact that her Ministry is working on a number of projects to accelerate service delivery and attainment of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG6) which is to “ensure access to water and sanitation for all”, a key focus area of the Government of Uganda.

Present to welcome Hon. Sekkindi to the Water family was the NWSC Board of Directors who lauded the tireless efforts of the men and women in the corporation, to ensure reliable service to the people of Uganda.

The BOD chairman Eng. Dr. Prof Baddru. M. Kiggundu stated that the Board, Management and Staff of NWSC are working tirelessly to deliver the corporation’s vision and, on behalf of the board, he pledged excellent services, strategic guidance and policy to propel NWSC to higher frontiers. We have completed works on a new corporate plan 2021-2023, which is anchored to the NDPIII and GoU’s commitment towards services for all, he said.

The NWSC Managing Director, Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha in his address welcomed Hon. Sekkindi to NWSC and shared the corporation’s success story over the years highlighting; the growth in operation, customer base, service coverage, Network length, revenue growth, international acknowledgement and so much more. Dr. Mugisha also talked about NWSC’s current focus on water for all, introducing a prepaid metering policy and measures to curb water theft.

The NWSC Deputy MD-Technical services, Eng. Johnson Amayo, presented the NWSC strategic Framework, strategic priorities, performance over the years, performance improvement programs, management strategies and undertakings, projects, the corporation’s external services arm, challenges and mitigation measures and strategic goals the corporation has placed to improve the lives of the people of Uganda.

Hon. Sekkindi couldn’t have picked a better place to be welcomed into the NWSC family as the Bugolobi Sewerage treatment plant happens to be one of the corporation’s extraordinary milestones.

Largest in East and Central Africa, set to serve over 850,000 people, treat over 45million liters of waste water including the dry flow from the Nakivubo channel before releasing water into Lake Victoria, produce manure, 630kw of power among others. The plant also aims to find a sustainable solution to the rapidly deteriorating water quality in the inner and outer Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria
