Kampala Water has taken a step in the right direction towards managing the huge operational costs associated with motor vehicle maintenance and the delays in service delivery by mechanics after the region officially launched the corporation’s first Auto Mechanical Garage at the Ggaba Water works on Monday 5 th May 2021. It doesn’t get any more “Africa’s Finest utility” than an in-house auto-repair innovation.

A delegation from Kampala Water headed by the General Manager-Mr. Mahmood Lutaya, saw to the unveiling and documentation of this rather impressive milestone. One that is believed to be one of the avenues in which Kampala Water will not only reduce on its motor-vehicle repair and maintenance costs but also improve on the time constraints associated with queuing up in garages for service, an aspect that may affect the day to day operations.

In his opening remarks, Eng. Andrew Muhwezi explained that team had been tasked to commence the construction, and in less than 2 weeks they had already executed the preliminary works and pledged that in another two weeks, it shall be converted into a more modern facility.

He then introduced the team behind the entire project and emphasised their zeal to kick start the assigned work immediately. The team comprises two mechanics, that is Auto mechanics and an administrator.

He called for high level of responsibility in running the workshop and cautioned that private cars were not allowed to be worked on at the facility. “A vehicle is supposed to have a sheet authorizing it to access the workshop, which will be approved by the Workshop Manager and right before releasing the vehicle, checks will be done thoroughly”.

The Senior Manager Human Resources thanked the Ggaba team for owning up the project and bringing it to reality in a record period of one week and a half. “Management decided to give transport to Kampala Water under HR and Administration Department to rationalize the high costs, aspects of fuel, maintenance, and personnel except for maintenance. He thanked SMWP for accepting to take on the task of building a workshop to cater for this aspect which has been a challenge to Management. ” I believe vehicle maintenance will now be manageable if all vehicle maintenance is channelled to our own garage as the KWHR department takes care of fuel and fleet Management.

The General Manager in his remarks applauded the entire Gaba team headed by Eng. Muhwezi for embracing this project with open arms. ” This facility is going to be an uptown auto garage with modern equipment, which will enable you to handle all the mechanical issues. For now, the ambiance is a work in progress but will be completed in the next 3months”. He pledged.

He tasked the team to always work with a positive mentality of growing the corporation’s
business.
