NWSC Honours Retired Staff, Celebrates Decades of Dedicated Service

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has honoured 15 retired staff members in recognition of their years of dedicated service to the Corporation, with 11 of the retirees having served for more than 25 years.

The former staff members, who retired between January and July 2026, were recognised during a Meet and Greet organised by the Human Resources Directorate at the International Resource Centre (IREC) in Bugolobi.

The event brought the retirees together with NWSC management and staff to celebrate their contribution to the Corporation, while also providing an opportunity to discuss life after formal employment, financial security, healthy living and the transition into retirement.

Speaking at the event, Director Human Resources, Ms. Eunice Alanyo, thanked the retirees for accepting the invitation and commended them for the years they devoted to serving NWSC.

Of the 15 retirees recognised, 11 served the Corporation for more than 25 years, two served for 24 years, while another two served between five and 10 years. Senior Office Assistant William Buule emerged as the longest-serving member of the group.

Ms. Alanyo highlighted the Corporation’s retirement benefits, which include gratuity, a long-service award, ring-fenced payment, a certificate of long service and accolade, provident fund benefits and lifetime medical care for qualifying staff who have served for at least 25 years.

Beyond the benefits, she encouraged the retirees to approach the next chapter of their lives with purpose, discipline and an entrepreneurial mindset.

“No one retires; you only retire when the tyre bursts,” she said, encouraging the retirees to remain active and continue pursuing opportunities that give them purpose and fulfillment.

She thanked NWSC Management and the Managing Director for supporting the initiative and wished the retirees a peaceful and fulfilling life beyond formal service.

The event also featured an interactive retirement planning session led by Ms. Joan Mugenzi, a Transformational Master Coach and Founding President of the International Coaching Federation Uganda Chapter, who has accumulated more than 3,000 hours of coaching experience. Ms. Mugenzi challenged the retirees to deliberately plan for the transition from salaried employment, particularly by identifying sustainable sources of replacement income. “Be firm and use the lessons learned over the years to determine where you can get income from,” she advised. Her presentation centred on three key aspects of retirement financial security, lifestyle adjustment and healthy living. She encouraged the retirees to establish meaningful daily routines and take responsibility for how they spend their time after leaving formal employment. She also underscored the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles, including making deliberate choices about nutrition and general wellbeing. But retirement, she noted, should not mean withdrawing from society. Ms. Mugenzi encouraged the former staff members to remain engaged with their communities and create spaces where they can share the knowledge and experience accumulated throughout their careers. She particularly urged them to embrace mentorship, noting that retired professionals can serve as an important source of wisdom and guidance for younger generations. The Meet and Greet concluded with the presentation of long-service certificates and accolades to the retirees in recognition of their contribution to NWSC, followed by a cocktail reception. The event formed part of the Corporation’s efforts to recognise long-serving employees while supporting staff as they transition from active service into retirement.
